Mental Health vs Mental Illness Understanding the Difference

The terms “mental health” and “mental illness” are often used interchangeably, but they refer to different concepts. Mental illness includes conditions like depression, anxiety, and bipolar disorder, while mental health refers to a state of well-being. Despite this, many people associate mental health with mental illness, leading to confusion.

Defining Mental Illness

Mental illness exists on a continuum, ranging from severe conditions to no mental illness. Where someone falls on this spectrum is influenced by individual, social, and environmental factors. Traditionally, the focus has been on treating mental illness to help people become well.

Understanding Good Mental Health

Good mental health is defined as a state of well-being where one realizes their potential and can cope with the normal stresses of life. To better understand this, consider adding a vertical line to represent mental health, with poor mental health (languishing) at the bottom and high mental health (flourishing) at the top.

Flourishing vs. Languishing

Languishing does not necessarily indicate mental illness. Anyone can feel disconnected or have low coping abilities. In contrast, someone who is flourishing is high-functioning, resilient, and well-connected to life, even if they have a mental illness. They may have sought appropriate help or treatment and are experiencing good mental health.

Awareness and Action

Awareness of where we sit on the mental health continuum helps us take appropriate action to improve our situation and thrive, regardless of whether we have a mental illness.
