Pillars Collapse and Building Falls into the Ocean

A small building at the end of the Santa Cruz Wharf fell into the ocean and floated into the mouth of the San Lorenzo River. Large waves have been crashing into the pillars all day, and eyewitnesses from San Jose described the gradual collapse of the structure.

Eyewitness Account

“We saw one pillar go down, then another, and a third,” described one witness. “At about 12:45 p.m., it all gave way, sending three people and the bathroom structure into the ocean. It sounded like thunder and was swaying before it finally slid into the water.”

Coast Guard Rescues Construction Workers

City officials confirmed that the three construction workers who fell into the ocean were rescued by the Coast Guard and are safe. Emergency crews are now focused on reinforcing the end of the pier and assessing the damage.

Beach Closures and Cleanup Efforts

The pier and at least two nearby beaches are closed for cleanup. Crews are busy reinforcing the pier and evaluating the extent of the damage to prevent any long-term issues.
